Basic information
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, based on the sixth book of J.K. Rowling's famous fantasy series Harry Potter, is adapted from the novel of the same name.
The film is directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Tom Felton, among others. It was released in the United States on July 15, 2009.
The movie tells the story of Harry Potter receiving a Potions textbook that once belonged to the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. With the help of the Prince's annotations in the book, Harry achieves great success in Potions class experiments. However, as the course progresses, the spells on these annotations become increasingly dark. Meanwhile, Voldemort is trying every means to destroy Harry's world, and the young man is also dealing with the turmoil of adolescent hormones. Harry finds himself increasingly attracted to Ginny Weasley, and after Ron gets a Gryffindor girlfriend, Lavender Brown, Hermione must confront her own feelings for Ron.

Positive evaluation
The "Harry Potter" series has always maintained a high standard of visual effects, with a sense of mystery and magical colors that have never failed to impress audiences in terms of photography, lighting, and special effects. Each film has shown technical advancements, and this installment is no exception. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" features a predominantly dark palette, giving viewers a very cold feeling. Particularly, the scenes depicting Voldemort's youthful memories and the sneaky Draco Malfoy turning into a demonic messenger both evoke a chilling sensation. The pale and handsome faces of the young actors also present a cold and beautiful aesthetic.
The opening scenes of the film, featuring a rapid panoramic scan of London and the explosion of the Millennium Bridge, achieve a visual effect that is truly astonishing; the subtle romance between Xiao Ha and the waitress in the small subway café, along with the complex emotional relationships among the main characters, all add interesting elements to the film. These Easter eggs, interspersed throughout the main plot, occasionally stimulate the audience's nerves, providing little comedic relief that prevents weariness from the headmaster's lengthy monologue.
Negative review
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is the sixth installment in the "Harry Potter" series. The plot continues to revolve around Harry and his friends' struggle against Voldemort. Although previous films focused on the romantic entanglements of the main characters, the storyline in this film feels too flat. Overall, the plot of this movie is too ordinary compared to the previous ones, with little climax and hardly any noticeable high points. Voldemort's appearance in this film is a highlight, as the entire story is about Harry's pursuit of Voldemort. However, the most anticipated face-off between Harry and Voldemort never materializes, which is quite disappointing for the audience.
As the young actors in "Harry Potter" have grown up, the films have added more romantic scenes, even featuring the first on-screen kisses of Ron, Harry, and Hermione. These romantic scenes, which take up a significant amount of screen time, fail to resonate with the audience, coming off as anything but romantic. However, the comedic parts of the films have still won plenty of applause, with Ron's goofy expressions after being cursed earning many laughs.
behind the scenes
Soul Vessel Cave Setup
The entrance to the Horcrux cave in the film was shot at the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland. Apart from the cave entrance and the island rock formations where Dumbledore and Harry first arrive, all the interior landscapes were created using computer-generated virtual sets.
The interior of the cave features geometric crystal structures, so the production team first studied various rock layers and visited quartz crystal caves and salt crystal caves to research the characteristics of crystal surfaces.
The final production team had to go through extensive research and development and numerous synthetic resin experiments to create a salt crystal that is both magical and realistic in appearance.
Quidditch shooting process
Compared to the previous Quidditch scenes, as the child actors have all grown up, the flying apparatus for this time needs to be redesigned. Some special devices are used to capture the actions of high-altitude flight, including one called the "matrix," which can securely fix actors or stunt performers to an axis and spin them quickly. The Quidditch scenes also incorporate other equipment, such as the "extreme arm," which can mount brooms on it and can be operated manually or mechanically; the large "Russian swing," which can actually swing a person into the air, allowing the camera to capture the free fall action; and of course, the traditional springboard.
The production team designed new Quidditch uniforms, including training wear, which are essentially track suits with added shoulder and leg pads, and leather helmets. The competition uniforms are clearly more refined than the training ones, all handcrafted and quite luxurious. The visual effects director Tim Burke and his team digitally added capes to the players during post-production, making them flow in a streamlined manner to enhance the sense of speed.
The set designers have also updated the appearance of the Quidditch stadium. More towers have been added, with closer spacing, allowing players more opportunities to weave through them, while also enhancing the sensation of rapid movement as objects zoom past at close range. Of course, there are also grand open-air stands, and the combined visual effect of all these elements is even more spectacular.
Box office results
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince grossed $79.5 million at the North American box office in its first three days, with weekend earnings of $26.83 million, $29.25 million, and $23.40 million respectively. Although each day's earnings were less than the $58 million on the opening day, the total after five days of release reached $159.7 million.
The international box office performance of the film has been even more impressive, with its global box office reaching a staggering $396.7 million as of July 20, 2009.
backstage trivia
In the beginning of the movie, there are about 13 minutes of 3D images.
Guillermo del Toro declined the invitation to direct the film because he was committed to directing "Hellboy: The Golden Army."
Anand Tucker and Michael Hoffman were both rumored to direct the film, but it was ultimately directed by David Yates, who previously helmed "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
The release date of the film kept changing, from November 21, 2008, to finally July 17, 2009. This actually helped to increase the number of IMAX theaters. In the release plan for November 2008, only 40 IMAX theaters were scheduled to show the film, but by July 2009, this number had increased by 60, totaling 100 IMAX theaters showing the film in July.
In the film, the audience saw the collapsed Millennium Bridge in London. This scene did not appear in the book because the Millennium Bridge was built in 2000, while the story of Harry Potter actually takes place in 1996.
Christian Coulson, who played the young Tom Riddle in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," expressed interest in continuing the role, but director David Yates felt he was too old (nearing 30) to portray the character, and ultimately the role was taken by Frank Dillane.
